Three Turning Points in the NFL’s Paris Debut

The Pittsburgh Steelers made history at Stade de France by defeating the New Orleans Saints 16-10 in the NFL’s first regular-season game held in France. The victory lifted Pittsburgh to 5-2, while New Orleans fell to 2-5 after an afternoon defined by defensive pressure, a stalled ground attack and missed opportunities.

How Pittsburgh Secured the Win

The Steelers did not dominate every phase, but they made the decisive plays when the game tightened. Pittsburgh’s defence stopped the Saints inside the red zone, and Chris Boswell’s third-quarter field goal restored a six-point advantage.

  • Payton Wilson’s interception: The Pittsburgh linebacker picked off Tyler Shough near the goal line during the third quarter, ending a promising New Orleans drive.
  • Chris Boswell’s 39-yard kick: The field goal converted the turnover into points and put Pittsburgh ahead 16-10.
  • A late defensive stand: The Steelers protected their lead as the Saints failed to create a final scoring opportunity.

Jaylen Warren also supplied Pittsburgh with an important spark on the ground, rushing for 101 yards on 18 carries. His production helped the Steelers control the tempo while the Saints struggled to establish their own running game.

New Orleans Left Too Many Points on the Field

The Saints’ biggest problem was their inability to move the ball consistently through the rushing attack. New Orleans produced only 18 rushing yards, forcing Shough to carry much of the offensive workload through the air.

Shough completed 30 of 38 passes for 278 yards, one touchdown and one interception. His short scoring pass to Devaughn Vele tied the contest at 10-10 late in the second quarter, and Alvin Kamara added seven receptions for 57 yards.

However, the offence could not finish its most important possession. With New Orleans threatening in the third quarter, Wilson intercepted a pass intended for Chris Olave. Shough accepted responsibility for the mistake, saying the throw needed to be placed farther outside.

Daniel Carlson then missed a 52-yard field-goal attempt wide right in the fourth quarter. Head coach Kellen Moore said the kicker’s late arrival in France, connected to the impending birth of his child, was not considered a reason for the miss. The team planned to review its kicking operation during the bye week.

The Scoreboard Tells Only Part of the Story

Category Pittsburgh New Orleans
Final record 5-2 2-5
Points 16 10
Key offensive figure Jaylen Warren: 101 rushing yards Tyler Shough: 278 passing yards
Critical turnover Payton Wilson interception Red-zone interception thrown
Ground production Strong enough to support game control 18 rushing yards

The result was especially damaging for New Orleans because the Saints entered the game with an efficient red-zone record. Before kickoff, Sharp Football Analysis had listed them with 16 touchdowns on 19 trips inside the opponent’s 20-yard line, one of the league’s strongest marks.

Why Paris Matters to the NFL

Stade de France provided a large stage for the league’s French debut. Constructed for the 1998 FIFA World Cup, the Saint-Denis venue can accommodate more than 80,000 spectators and is France’s largest stadium.

The stadium has no permanent tenant and is scheduled to host almost 40 events this year. Its previous major occasions include the 2024 Olympics and three UEFA Champions League finals. For the NFL game, crews replaced the usual football pitch with a hybrid surface combining natural grass and synthetic fibres.

Security was also a major consideration during the week. Protests had spread across France since September 18, and NFL executive vice-president Peter O’Reilly said additional security measures were put in place. The league never seriously considered cancelling or relocating the event.

New Orleans’ International Opportunity

The Saints hold the NFL’s assigned marketing rights in France, giving the club a direct role in developing the local audience. The organization uses French-language social channels and has supported efforts to make American football more visible in the country.

Saints owner Gayle Benson was among the representatives who met French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss the game and the sport’s future in Paris. Yet the loss made the international show less valuable from a competitive standpoint.

American football still faces a sizeable challenge in France. Jan Woska, the Saints’ international relations liaison, said the sport ranks 11th in popularity, behind activities including judo, swimming and fencing. Winning games remains a central part of attracting new supporters.

Flag football is expected to help broaden that appeal. The non-contact version of the sport will debut at the 2028 Olympics, and NFL executive Brett Gosper has described it as a major tool for building the league’s fan base. The Saints also help fund a French tournament whose champions receive a trip to New Orleans.

For now, the Saints return home with more immediate concerns. General manager Mickey Loomis has asked for patience with a young, developing roster, while Moore indicated that every area of the operation—including possible staff changes—would be assessed.

The Steelers, meanwhile, leave France with a landmark victory, a winning record and a defensive performance that turned one red-zone mistake into the game’s defining moment.
