Two of the most visible corporate bitcoin holders have taken sizable paper losses, putting a sharp spotlight on concentration risk. Metaplanet said it had roughly $1.5 billion in unrealized losses on 43,000 BTC, while Strategy reported about $8.2 billion in paper losses, leaving the combined figure near $10 billion.
That scale matters because these positions are tied to a single volatile asset with no native cash yield. When a treasury strategy depends on bitcoin alone, a price slide can erode reported equity value long before any coins are sold.
Analysts have framed the situation as a warning about balance-sheet design, not just market timing. Brian A Jackson argued that concentrated digital asset treasuries face outsized exposure whenever bitcoin falls, especially when there is little or no diversification to soften the blow.
Even with those losses, bitcoin has not been collapsing in a straight line. The asset has recently traded in a relatively narrow band around the mid-$60,000 range, which has encouraged some traders to believe the worst of the downturn may already be behind it.
Alex Kuptsikevich of FxPro said bitcoin’s decline has largely stalled near levels that resemble prior bull-market highs, adding that movement near the 200-week moving average and around $64,000 supports the case that bearish pressure is fading.
That does not erase the underlying problem for heavily exposed firms. Paper losses can improve if prices recover, but they also reveal how quickly a treasury model can become vulnerable when its main asset behaves more like a speculative position than a productive reserve.
The concern deepens when bitcoin purchases are financed with borrowing. Strategy and Metaplanet are among the companies that have used debt to expand their holdings, a structure that increases pressure if the market weakens for an extended period.
Jackie Lin described debt-funded bitcoin accumulation as a speculative gamble because the asset does not generate cash flow or yield. In that setting, falling prices can force firms to tolerate use stress, raise new capital, or realize losses that were previously only on paper.
The broader market implication is straightforward: if more public companies copy this approach, bitcoin risk becomes more concentrated inside corporate treasuries rather than spread across a wider set of investors. That could amplify market stress during downturns and make sentiment toward crypto-linked equities more fragile, even if bitcoin itself remains near major technical levels.
