Backup Quarterbacks Set Up a Crucial CFL Finale

Saskatchewan enters Saturday’s regular-season finale with its playoff future still unsettled. The Roughriders have secured a postseason berth, but a victory over Edmonton would keep them in the Western playoff bracket instead of sending them across to the East.

The Edmonton Elks have a different concern. At 13-4, they have already locked up first place in the West and will host the Western Final on November 7. Saskatchewan, meanwhile, sits at 9-8 and needs one more win to finish third in the division.

The matchup at Mosaic Stadium is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, with kickoff at 3:00 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast in Canada on TSN.

The standings give Saskatchewan a clear objective. A win would place the Roughriders third in the West and create a Western Semi-Final against the BC Lions on October 31. A loss would drop Saskatchewan to fourth and send the team into the Eastern Semi-Final against the Toronto Argonauts.

Friday’s Winnipeg–BC matchup could affect the final Western standings, including the positions of Winnipeg and Calgary. Saskatchewan, however, does not need to calculate every possible scenario. Winning at home is the simplest route to remaining in the West.

Two Backup Quarterbacks Change the Matchup

Neither team is expected to use its regular starting quarterback for the full importance of a normal divisional game. Saskatchewan is resting veteran Trevor Harris and preparing Jack Coan for his first CFL start.

Harris has been the Roughriders’ main passer and was named Grey Cup MVP. Coan has spent three seasons with Saskatchewan, but his professional experience remains limited. He has attempted only 31 CFL passes, making Saturday a significant test of his readiness.

Coan does not need to imitate Harris. Saskatchewan would benefit from a controlled plan built around quick throws, dependable reads and a productive running game. Avoiding negative plays may matter more than attempting difficult deep passes early.

Edmonton is also expected to protect its starting quarterback. Cody Fajardo helped lead the Elks to a 35-27 win over Winnipeg on October 16, but the team has little incentive to risk him after clinching the top seed.

Taylor Powell could therefore take the majority of the snaps for Edmonton. His performance may depend heavily on how many first-team players remain on the field. A backup quarterback surrounded by regular starters presents a different challenge from one playing behind a heavily rotated lineup.

Why Edmonton May Still Be Dangerous

The Elks have already achieved their main regular-season goal, but that does not guarantee a passive approach. Edmonton is coming off a breakthrough campaign after finishing last in the West in 2025, and its 13-4 record reflects strong production on both sides of the ball.

Running back Justin Rankin supplied 133 rushing yards in the victory over Winnipeg, while Fajardo contributed through the air and on the ground. Even if several starters receive limited work in Regina, Edmonton’s reserves will have strong motivation to establish themselves before the playoffs.

Backup players often face a valuable opportunity in a finale like this. A strong showing can influence future roster decisions, while a poor performance may expose depth concerns before the Western Final. Saskatchewan should not assume that Edmonton’s rotation will eliminate the competitive edge of the visitors.

The game’s tempo could also change if Edmonton emphasizes player safety. Longer possessions and a run-heavy approach would reduce exposure for the reserve quarterback and limit the number of high-risk plays. That strategy could keep the contest close even if Saskatchewan controls field position.

Three Matchup Questions Worth Watching

Can Coan Handle the First-Start Pressure?

Coan’s first few possessions may reveal how aggressively Saskatchewan can operate. If he delivers the ball on time and avoids turnovers, the Roughriders can keep their offense balanced. If Edmonton creates early pressure, the home team may be forced into predictable passing situations.

The crowd at Mosaic Stadium should help Saskatchewan, particularly because the result directly affects the playoff path. That energy will matter most if the Roughriders turn it into an early lead rather than allowing Edmonton to dictate the game.

How Many Regulars Will Edmonton Use?

Edmonton’s inactive list may be more important than its record. The Elks could rest key receivers, linemen and defensive starters, or reduce their workload once the game’s result becomes less relevant to their postseason position.

Those changes would improve Saskatchewan’s chances, but they would also make the game harder to evaluate. Edmonton’s reserve players could produce a surprisingly energetic performance, especially against a Roughriders team dealing with its own quarterback change.

Will the Offenses Play Conservatively?

Two inexperienced quarterbacks could encourage both coaching staffs to simplify their game plans. Short completions, rushing attempts and field-position decisions may dominate the first half.

That setup points toward a lower-scoring game, but turnovers create an important exception. A tipped pass or poor decision can give either offense a short field and quickly push the total higher than expected.

Betting Perspective Before Kickoff

Saskatchewan has the stronger immediate incentive, home-field advantage and a likely opponent lineup that will include several reserves. Those factors make the Roughriders appealing on the moneyline, but Coan’s lack of starting experience prevents the matchup from being straightforward.

The point spread may shift sharply after the official quarterbacks and inactive players are announced. A large Saskatchewan spread would require confidence that motivation can overcome the uncertainty surrounding its own offense. A smaller number may offer a more balanced assessment of the teams’ circumstances.

The total also deserves caution. Conservative play-calling could reduce scoring, while quarterback mistakes could create sudden points. Rather than relying only on the teams’ season averages, bettors should examine the confirmed personnel and expected playing time.

Player props carry especially high risk in this spot. A receiver or running back who appears likely to play may leave once Edmonton protects key contributors, while Saskatchewan could also adjust workloads if it builds a comfortable lead. Final lineup news should be available before making decisions in those markets.

Prediction: Saskatchewan Has the Situational Edge

Edmonton has been the better team across the full season, and its 13-4 record is difficult to overlook. The Elks also defeated Winnipeg in their latest outing and have earned the right to prioritize preparation for the Western Final.

Saturday’s circumstances favor Saskatchewan, though. The Roughriders need the victory, will play in front of their home crowd and may face an Edmonton lineup missing several established starters. Those advantages should offset at least some of the uncertainty created by Coan’s first CFL start.

Prediction: Saskatchewan wins a competitive, potentially low-scoring game.

The Roughriders should be able to create enough opportunities through field position and the running game to support Coan. Edmonton’s reserves can keep the result close, but Saskatchewan has more to gain from every possession.

A victory would do more than improve the final record. It would keep Saskatchewan in the Western bracket, provide a confidence boost before the playoffs and allow the team to avoid the cross-over route into the East.
