Hockey’s First 2026 Tune-Up Brings Canada’s Power Rivalry

Hockey returns on Saturday, September 19, and the opening night of the 2026-27 preseason wastes no time delivering a classic matchup.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Montréal Canadiens will meet twice on the same night in split-squad action, with both games set for 7 p.m. ET.

One game will be played at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, while the other will take place at the Bell Centre in Montréal.

How the Two Games Work

This setup is intentional, not a fixture error. Each club is dividing its roster so coaches can send one group into action in Toronto and another group to Montréal.

Split-squad games give teams a chance to evaluate more players under real game pressure, which matters even more when the preseason is short.

With fewer exhibition dates available, every shift carries extra weight for players trying to earn roster spots or secure a bigger role.

A Shorter Preseason, a Longer Regular Season

The NHL’s preseason runs from September 19 through September 26, and the regular season begins on September 29.

At the same time, the league has expanded the regular schedule from 82 games to 84, leaving clubs with less room to sort out line combinations and test prospects.

That change makes the early exhibition slate more valuable than it used to be. Teams have less time to make decisions, and players have fewer chances to stand out.

What Toronto Fans Should Follow

For the Maple Leafs, the scoreboard is not the main story in September. The real focus is on how individual players fit together and whether younger skaters can handle tougher minutes.

It will be worth watching which players get meaningful ice time alongside established NHL names. Those pairings often reveal where coaches see the best chemistry.

Special teams also matter in preseason action. Power-play looks and penalty-kill setups can be tested without the pressure of regular-season points on the line.

Why Montréal Starts With Confidence

The Canadiens enter camp with real momentum after a strong 2025-26 season that ended with 106 points and a run to the Eastern Conference Final.

That progress has been matched by stability behind the bench, as head coach Martin St. Louis has now received a multi-year contract extension.

Instead of opening the year with uncertainty, Montréal begins with a clear sense of direction and a coach the organization has publicly backed.

St. Louis Has Shifted the Team’s Ceiling

Montréal’s rise under St. Louis has been steady and clear. The team moved from 68 points in 2022-23 to 76, then 91, and finally 106 last season.

That climb has changed the way the Canadiens are viewed. They are no longer just a young team hoping to improve; they are expected to compete.

After reaching the Eastern Conference Final, the next step is no longer about potential alone. It is about proving the success was the start of something lasting.

Another Rivalry Test Arrives Soon

The preseason opener is only the first chapter in this familiar matchup. Toronto and Montréal will also face each other again when the regular season opens on September 29.

That gives these September 19 games an added layer of interest, since the same rivalry will return in a much more meaningful setting just ten days later.

The rosters will change, and the intensity will rise, but the tension between these two franchises never really goes away.
