Leão Takes Portugal’s Famous 7 as Ronaldo Steps Away

Portugal’s lineup changes before Denmark

Portugal’s squad for Thursday’s Nations League meeting with Denmark featured one headline change: Cristiano Ronaldo was out, and Rafael Leão was listed as the new wearer of the No. 7 shirt. The official squad release came shortly after Ronaldo left the national team camp.

The number carries unusual weight in Portuguese football because it has been tied to Ronaldo for nearly two decades. For this match, however, the shirt moved to Leão, who usually plays for Portugal in No. 17.

Why the number moved

The switch was not a symbolic gesture so much as a squad-list adjustment. Nations League rules require each team to submit a 23-player match list with fixed shirt numbers, so once Ronaldo was no longer included, the No. 7 became available.

That opening also created a small reshuffle elsewhere in the squad:

  • Rafael Leão switched from No. 17 to No. 7
  • Fábio Silva took over Leão’s old No. 17 and made the matchday group
  • Bruno Fernandes returned after missing the Norway match with an injury
  • Francisco Conceição remained unavailable while recovering

How Ronaldo’s exit unfolded

Ronaldo departed the camp on Wednesday, September 30, after head coach Jorge Jesus held a press conference and spoke with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença. Ronaldo said he would explain his decision later.

The situation had already been building for days. He started on the bench in Portugal’s 2-1 win over Norway, then trained separately even though he was fit. Jesus later said Ronaldo was unhappy with the decision, but denied that the disagreement had turned into a major breakdown.

What Leão stepping in means

Leão’s temporary move into the No. 7 shirt carries obvious symbolism because the number has become inseparable from Ronaldo’s international identity. Still, the assignment applies to this Denmark fixture, not necessarily to Portugal’s long-term future shirt list.

The timing has fueled plenty of speculation, especially with kickoff in Copenhagen approaching so quickly. Even so, as of October 1, the federation had not announced any retirement decision, and Ronaldo had previously suggested that the 2026/27 season could be his last.
