Week 1’s Biggest NFL Surprises and Shifts

The NFL season opened with a mix of breakout performances, injuries, and coaching debuts that immediately changed the conversation. Sunday’s games produced record-setting offense, uneasy quarterback situations, and a few teams that already look different from what was expected.

First-Year Coaches Delivered Mixed Results

Sunday was a first test for four new play-callers, and the outcomes varied sharply. Mike LaFleur’s Cardinals stunned the Chargers as 8.5-point underdogs, with Jacoby Brissett throwing for 277 yards while the defense forced two important turnovers. Klint Kubiak’s Raiders also started strong, using improved play up front to help Ashton Jeanty put together a breakout performance in a win over Miami.

Joe Brady’s debut with Buffalo pushed the Bills toward a more aggressive downfield approach, and Josh Allen answered by going 6-for-7 for 149 yards on passes traveling more than 10 air yards in the first half alone. Todd Monken’s first game in Cleveland went in the opposite direction, as the Browns were beaten 34-10 by Jacksonville and Deshaun Watson looked out of rhythm in his first regular-season action since October 2024.

Cleveland’s defense also struggled without Myles Garrett and former coordinator Jim Schwartz, which made the debut look even rougher. It was a reminder that a new playbook cannot hide roster problems when the pressure rises.

Dallas and New York Took Different Paths

New York made one of the day’s loudest statements by defeating Dallas 28-20. The Giants piled up 165 rushing yards, and Jaxson Dart looked ready in his first major spotlight, passing for 230 yards and three touchdowns while adding 54 yards on the ground.

The result mattered because Dallas had won 16 of the previous 18 meetings before Sunday. With Philadelphia and Washington also looking vulnerable, New York suddenly appears to belong in the NFC East race.

Isaiah Likely was another key reason for the Giants’ success, catching all eight of his targets for 78 yards and two touchdowns. Dallas, meanwhile, looked unsettled under new defensive playcaller Christian Parker, committing seven first-half penalties and adding a costly fourth-quarter taunting call that hurt its chances in a close game.

Scoring Outbursts Set Early Marks

Chicago delivered the most explosive game of the weekend, as the Bears outlasted Carolina 59-37 in a matchup that produced 96 combined points, the most ever in an NFL season opener. Caleb Williams was central to the win, accounting for 269 passing yards and two rushing touchdowns.

The Panthers paid for a defense that could not keep pace after heavy offseason investment in the front seven. The 59 points allowed became the most in franchise history, and the loss raised immediate questions about how much improvement is really on the way.

Buffalo also saw history fall in a 36-31 win over Houston. Josh Allen recorded his ninth career game with multiple passing and rushing touchdowns, extending a mark that already stands five games ahead of anyone else in league history. He also became the first player to reach 300 combined touchdowns within nine seasons.

Baltimore joined the record book too, with Derrick Henry rushing for 144 yards and three touchdowns in a rout of Indianapolis. That performance moved him past Jim Brown for the most 100-yard, multi-touchdown games in NFL history. Detroit needed overtime to edge New Orleans 31-30, and rookie back Jahmyr Gibbs reached 51 career touchdowns in only his 50th game, the sixth-fastest pace ever.

Quarterback Health Became the Big Early Concern

Several teams left Week 1 with immediate quarterback questions. Minnesota lost its starter, Kyler Murray, after only 11 plays because of a concussion, and Carson Wentz stepped in to throw three touchdowns as the Vikings scored 29 straight points to beat Green Bay 39-22. Wentz is expected to hold the job until Murray clears the concussion protocol.

Atlanta had a far harder time in relief work, with Cooper Rush struggling while filling in for the injured Tua Tagovailoa during a loss to Pittsburgh. The Falcons are now hoping Michael Penix Jr. can be ready by Week 2.

Indianapolis also got a difficult return, as Daniel Jones came back from a torn Achilles in a one-sided loss and spent much of the day dealing with shaky protection. Washington’s Jayden Daniels had a slow start against Philadelphia, completing only 6 of 16 passes in the first half before settling in late during a narrow defeat.

Fantasy Managers Got Some Clear Signals

Week 1 also created an early fantasy map. Isaiah Likely produced the best tight end line of the week with eight catches for 78 yards and two scores, while Ashton Jeanty backed up the preseason hype with 32.7 fantasy points in his strong showing for Las Vegas.

Christian Watson turned in a big stat line with 147 yards and two touchdowns on six catches, making him a more interesting lower-end WR2 option going forward. Trey McBride kept showing his value as well, posting his eighth 20-plus fantasy-point game in 13 outings with Brissett at quarterback.

Elsewhere, Lamar Jackson looked like a top-two quarterback play for Week 2 after putting up 324 passing yards, 41 rushing yards, and two total touchdowns. Dontayvion Wicks stayed off many radars in most leagues but flashed with 77 yards and a touchdown on just two catches, while Ja’Marr Chase’s quiet 3.2-point opener should not trigger panic because of his history of slow starts.

Detroit and Buffalo now face a short week before Thursday Night Football, and several teams that lost in Week 1, including Dallas, Cleveland, and Atlanta, will try to stabilize quickly against familiar opponents in Week 2.
