The Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Islanders meet on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. ET at Scotiabank Arena, and the setup gives Toronto a small but real edge. The Leafs are playing their second game in two nights after opening the season against Montréal, while the Islanders are stepping into their first game of the year.
The most eye-catching storyline is the faceoff between Gavin McKenna and Matthew Schaefer, the first overall picks in the 2026 and 2025 NHL drafts. That pairing brings plenty of attention, but the game could still be decided by older, more established players who are already trusted to drive offense.
Toronto has more than one scorer who can tilt the ice, while New York will need to create enough quality chances to support Ilya Sorokin if he starts in goal. That balance may matter more than the draft pedigree on display.
McKenna is expected to begin his NHL career on a line with John Tavares and William Nylander, which gives him high-end skill around him from the start. That setup should ease some of the pressure on the 18-year-old and also help Toronto generate quick-strike offense.
Matthews remains the player New York must respect most near the net. If he gets space, he can change the game with one clean look, and that makes him a constant threat in a close contest.
Nylander’s value is not just in his own shot production. His timing and ability to set up teammates could become even more important late if Toronto needs a response or a game-winning push.
For the Islanders, the clearest path to a competitive opener runs through Ilya Sorokin. Last season he led the NHL in high-danger saves, a sign that he can keep New York alive even when the shot count leans against it.
Bo Horvat is the other major name Toronto has to track closely. He led the Islanders with 31 goals in 68 games last season, and his finishing around the crease is exactly the kind of detail that can punish a team taking one bad shift at a time.
Schaefer also enters the night with a little uncertainty. He missed the Islanders’ final preseason game because of an upper-body issue, so his availability and workload are worth monitoring before puck drop.
Mathew Barzal remains an important question mark for New York. He was placed on the injured non-roster list while dealing with a knee problem, but he was still expected to travel with the team and had not been ruled out for the opener.
If Barzal is available, the Islanders gain another skilled playmaker who can make their offense more dangerous in transition. If he cannot go, the burden on Horvat and the rest of the lineup becomes much heavier.
Toronto’s home ice matters, but so does the range of offensive options in its lineup. Matthews can finish, Nylander can create, Tavares can stabilize the attack, and McKenna gives the club another source of skill right away.
The one factor that keeps this from looking like a comfortable home win is Toronto’s busy schedule. Playing the night before could leave the Leafs a step slower, which gives the Islanders a real chance if Sorokin is sharp and New York manages to control the middle of the ice.
Prediction: Maple Leafs win a tight one. That call becomes less certain if Toronto looks drained from its opener or if Barzal is cleared to play and gives the Islanders more punch at the top of the lineup.
