The NHL’s Frozen Frenzy returns Tuesday, Oct. 13, bringing all 32 teams together for a 16-game show. Staggered puck drops create a nonstop stream of hockey, while ESPN’s national coverage moves between major matchups and developing stories across the league.
The previous edition delivered 109 goals in 16 games, with visiting teams finishing 9-6-1 and five contests requiring overtime or a shootout. That record suggests another unpredictable night could be ahead.
ESPN’s main broadcast features three nationally televised games:
The remaining games begin at 15-minute intervals, allowing fans to follow the entire schedule through NHL Power Play on the ESPN App. ESPN2, Disney+ and the ESPN App will also carry five hours of whip-around coverage hosted by John Buccigross and Kevin Weekes.
The full slate covers every division, with games beginning in Detroit at 6 p.m. ET and continuing into the West Coast nightcap in San Jose.
Boston enters the event with David Pastrnak wearing the captain’s “C.” He is the 28th captain in Bruins history and has recorded four consecutive 100-point seasons since 2022-23. During that span, he has collected 436 points in 329 games, including 254 goals, giving him a substantial lead over Pavel Zacha as Boston’s top producer.
Detroit’s situation is considerably more unsettled. Dylan Larkin requested a trade despite having five seasons remaining on his contract, and the Red Wings removed him from the captaincy after his return. Fans even booed him while he watched from the stands in street clothes, although Montreal supporters later greeted him with chants calling for his arrival.
Several other Eastern Conference games carry immediate history:
Carolina has begun its title defence with 11 points from 14 available. Sebastian Aho leads the club with six goals and five assists, and the Hurricanes will see Washington again after suffering their only regulation defeat against the Capitals.
The Rangers lost Igor Shesterkin to a season-ending knee injury after five games and have turned to 24-year-old Dylan Garand in goal. Philadelphia’s start has been even rougher: the Flyers opened 0-7 and heard fans call for coach Rick Tocchet’s dismissal before hosting Seattle.
Washington’s most emotional storyline belongs to Alex Ovechkin. The NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer has confirmed that this is his final run with the Capitals and has already scored his first goal of the season.
Jack Eichel has raced to 12 points in six games as he pursues what would be the first 100-point season in Golden Knights history. San Jose’s Macklin Celebrini, now 20, is also attracting attention after producing 115 points last season and finishing fourth in MVP voting.
Edmonton appears to be an early Western Conference contender under new coach Mike Babcock. Connor McDavid and the Oilers face a strong Utah Mammoth team, creating one of the night’s clearest tests between established star power and an emerging roster.
Chicago welcomes Patrick Kane back to the city where he won three Stanley Cups. Sidney Crosby, meanwhile, enters the Frenzy still looking for his first goal after six games, though he has contributed two assists.
Winnipeg must manage without suspended goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. Stuart Skinner has taken on the larger workload and owns a .920 save percentage. Vancouver has received an early boost from Elias Pettersson, who has eight points in seven games, while Dallas is evaluating pending free agent Jason Robertson as he plays for a major new contract.
The Frozen Frenzy is more than a packed schedule. It offers a quick snapshot of the NHL’s changing landscape: young players pushing into starring roles, veterans chasing milestones, contenders testing their depth and struggling teams searching for direction.
With 16 games unfolding across one evening, the event rewards viewers who keep the live coverage running. Every shift can change a division race, revive a difficult season or add another unexpected chapter to the league’s busiest night.
