Toronto’s Road Trip Finale Tests Its New Confidence

Toronto enters Salt Lake City with momentum, but the Utah Mammoth present a difficult final challenge on the Maple Leafs’ three-game road trip. The matchup begins Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET at Delta Center, where the 3-2-1 Leafs will meet a 4-2-0 Mammoth team coming off a strong start.

William Nylander will attract most of the attention after producing two goals and three assists in Toronto’s 6-3 victory over the Colorado Avalanche. His five-point night matched a career high and moved him beyond 700 points in the NHL.

Nylander Gives Toronto Its Biggest Offensive Spark

Nylander has quickly become Toronto’s most productive offensive player this season. He leads the team with five goals and 11 points, while his six assists are tied with Auston Matthews for the club lead.

His performance in Denver showed how effectively he can influence every part of the attack. Nylander scored twice, created opportunities for his linemates, and helped Toronto turn a close game into a convincing win.

Matthews also recorded four points against Colorado, giving the Leafs two elite threats operating at full speed. If both stars continue generating chances, Utah’s defenders will have little room for error.

Toronto May Get Another Veteran Back

John Tavares has joined the team in Utah after missing the Colorado game following the birth of his son. If he returns to the lineup, Toronto will gain another reliable scorer and an experienced option down the middle.

Tavares’ presence could improve the Leafs’ lineup balance, particularly if Toronto can create sustained pressure across several forward lines. His addition would also provide another established player for the power play, where quick puck movement and finishing ability can change the game.

The win over Colorado lifted Toronto’s record to 3-2-1, and the Leafs have collected at least one point in three straight games. A strong result in Utah would send them home with a meaningful boost.

Utah’s Special Teams Create the Main Threat

The Mammoth are not simply a team Toronto can overlook after one impressive road win. Utah is 4-2-0 overall and went 3-2-0 during its recent five-game road trip.

The most urgent concern is Utah’s power play. The Mammoth have converted at a 40% rate, the best figure in the league, and have already scored 10 times with the man advantage. That makes every Toronto penalty potentially costly.

Toronto, however, owns the league’s top penalty kill at 95%. The game could therefore turn on a direct special-teams contest: Utah’s aggressive power play against the Leafs’ disciplined penalty-killing unit.

Staying out of the box will be essential. Even the NHL’s best penalty kill can be overwhelmed if a team repeatedly gives a dangerous opponent opportunities near the net.

Utah’s Scoring Comes From All Over the Lineup

The Mammoth are difficult to defend because their offense is not dependent on one player. Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz each have eight points, while all 19 Utah skaters who have appeared this season have registered at least one point.

Schmaltz has been especially dangerous early in the campaign, and Toronto must track him carefully through the neutral zone. At the same time, focusing too heavily on one line could open space for Utah’s other contributors.

The Leafs will need compact defensive coverage, clean changes, and consistent backchecking. A loose shift could quickly become a scoring chance against a team with this much depth.

Game Details and Final Outlook

This matchup gives Toronto a chance to close its road trip with consecutive statement wins. The Leafs have already demonstrated that their top-end talent can overwhelm a strong opponent, but Utah’s home-ice advantage and special-teams production make this a different kind of test.

Nylander’s form remains the central storyline. Another multi-point performance would strengthen the case that his five-point showing in Colorado was part of a sustained surge rather than an isolated explosion.
